About us
Introduction
Asia has experienced rapid technological advancement, but remains untapped potential for cultural development and innovative practices. Our project addresses the pressing issue of unaffordable housing in Asia by introducing Livingo, an innovative platform that connects renters with compatible roommates. This platform is designed to make shared living more accessible and appealing, recognizing that inefficient housing undermines the competitiveness of the entire economy and the principles of sustainable development. Our mission is to revolutionize the housing landscape in Asia by creating a safer, more affordable, and user-friendly housing platform.
Problem
According to the Asian Development Bank, the region needs to build 70 million new affordable housing units by 2030 to meet the growing demand. Housing costs have surged to exorbitant levels, with a 35 sqm condominium costing 6 to 30 times the average annual income in Asia. In Singapore, homeownership exceeds 80%, yet housing prices exceed 8 times the average annual income. The Asian Development Bank classifies 92.9% of housing in Asia as severely unaffordable.
The absence of a straightforward method for accessing shared living arrangements exacerbates the problem. Existing housing platforms suffer from complex user interfaces, crowded websites, non-transparent listings, language barriers, and long search cycles. Trust remains elusive, identity validation is challenging, roommate matching is unresolved, and preference specification is lacking.
Solution
Our solution is a platform with an intuitive design that matches renters with roommates to achieve more affordable, faster, and safer housing. We prioritize roommate experience optimization and simplified the search and rental processes. In just four clicks, users can seamlessly find both roommates and housing: specify the location and lease terms, review roommate details, initiate contact by introducing themselves and sharing their profiles, and, finally, secure accommodations upon connection and approval. Asia´s first platform focused on shared living and roommates
CEO & Founder
My name is Yvonne Lan, a 22-year-old student currently pursuing my studies at NTU Singapore where I received the Entrepreneurship Study Award and ASEAN Innovation study grant. My journey began in Germany where I grew up and pursued a creative background in design. During a gap year in 2018, I had the fortune of studying aboard at Shenzhen University, where I learned Chinese for the first time and where the idea for Livingo was originally conceived. As a foreigner looking for housing in Southeast Asia, I was forced to navigate the language barrier, confusing websites and UI, extended search cycle ranging from 8-12 weeks, limited amenities sourcing, and lack of roommate options. In Singapore alone, there are 250,000 international students, with NTU expecting 3 times the amount of Chinese student by 2024, and expat population at 1.64 million in 2020. With the visa free entrance for Chinese citizens into Singapore and the high number of relocations, I saw an opportunity to combine my design expertise with my interest in real estate and entrepreneurship to create a modernized housing experience. I created a prototype which allows safer, faster, more affordable, and user-friendly housing solution from scratch. Focused on helping student, young professionals, individuals living alone, and short-term resident find living accommodations in an innovative and efficient way. By matching renters with compatible roommates, this platform aims to revolutionize the housing landscape and provide a much-needed innovation to the Asian market.
